ISRO to launch 8th satellite in the NAVIC constellation

The Indian Space Research Organisation ( ISRO) today will launch the final navigation satellite IRNSS-1H on August 31 to support and backup the existing seven satellites of NavIC(Navigation in Indian Constellation) .

To be launched on board PSLV-C39, IRNSS-1H will serve as a back-up  navigation satellite for IRNSS-1A, one of the seven satellites in the constellation whose 3 three rubidium atomic clocks on board had stopped functioning. These clocks were imported from Europe from the Europe Space Agency , even they have faced a simlar problem but on a bigger scale than isro .

“PSLV-C39/IRNSS-1H Mission is scheduled to be launched on August 31 at 18:59 Hrs from SDSC SHAR (Satish Dhawan Space Centre), Sriharikota,”

About the satellite

The spacecraft weighing a little over 1,400 kg was built and tested by ISRO along with six other small and medium industries. The NAVIC or technically Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System ( IRNSS) is an independent regional navigation satellite system developed by India which is as good as if not better than the US-based GPS. The system that offers services like terrestrial and marine navigation, disaster management, vehicle tracking and fleet management, navigation aide for hikers and travellers, visual and voice navigation for drivers and was named as  ‘NavIC’ (Navigation with Indian Constellation) by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself.

How may countries have their own Navigation systems?

Answer is not many , very few countries own them some include USA’s GPS , Europe’s navigation system which is currently not in good state thanks to many satellites atomic clocks malfunctioning  , then China has its own and also japan and Russia. ISRO is also planning to launch 70 satellites in the next 5 years.
