Mangalyaan completes 4 years

One of India’s most celebrated successes that have enamoured the world is its Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM). The maiden interplanetary mission of ISRO, which was launched on November 5, 2013, by PSLV-C25 was put into Martian orbit on September 24, 2014, in its first attempt.

Mars Orbiter Mission has now completed over 1100 days in orbit, which is way more time than it was estimated to live. This mission made the world sit up and take notice of India’s spmace program and continues to serve as a source of motivation to Indian research students.

Some of its features :

1. The focal objective of MOM is to work on the technologies required for designing, planning, managing and operating an interplanetary mission in the future .

2. It was easily the most affordable or least expensive Mars mission till date and indubitably a successful one.

3. It is also secondarily working on obtaining data pertaining to the red planet’s surface features, morphology (topography), mineralogy and Martian atmosphere.

4. MOM’s competence is driven by the presence of these tools – A colour imaging camera which has taken several images, a thermal infrared spectrometer to measure the chemical composition of the surface and instruments to assess Mars’ atmosphere.

5. It has produced over 715 images till date.

MOM is well equipped to take care of itself for long periods with very little any ground intervention .The orbit had to be repositioned when a asteroid passed by. It’s a matter of great pride that India’s Mars Orbiter Mission has exceeded expectations and is helping us pave way for bigger, more elaborate and path-breaking missions.
