The economic viability of building a hyperloop is something that many have thought of exploring but not ventured yet, but now Richard Branson’s Virgin Hyperloop One has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government to build a hyperloop transportation system between Mumbai and Pune. The hyperloop will bring down travel time to just 25 minutes from the three hours it currently takes. The MoU announcement was made during the Magnetic Maharashtra investor summit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sir Richard Branson announced the partnership between Virgin Hyperloop One and Maharashtra. The deal will work towards developing a high-speed link between Pune and Mumbai with the route going via Mumbai International Airport.

The total cost of the project and an exact timeline is yet to be finalized as the Hyperloop as transportation will take some time to come to India. In a press release, Virgin Hyperloop One Chairman Richard Branson said, “Virgin Hyperloop One can help India become a global transportation pioneer and forge a new world-changing industry. The Pune-Mumbai route is an ideal first corridor as part of a national hyperloop network that will dramatically reduce travel times between most of India’s major cities to under two hours. ”
According to media reports it will take at least three years to complete the test run of the hyperloop and about six years to start commercial operations. It is claimed that the cost of building a hyperloop is much less than building a railway line for the same distance. Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla was the first one to propose the Hyperloop concept. However, he is no longer directly involved in the development of this technology.
