Why is sugar called chini in India ?

Sugar is called mostly called Shakkar in Hindi but many also call it cheeni or chini !!. what are the reasons behind this ?. After doing a bit of research i got to know two stories . Doing a simple google search does not give the answer . You might end up on this page .

Hindi video:

Reasons for Sugar being called Chini/Cheeni in India

1st Story

This story i read on Quora ! .It Said that even though Sugar began production in India first .We would mostly produce brown sugar . This would be produced from gud/Jaggery or the Sugar cane pulp . India was also one of the biggest exporters . The Chinese meanwhile managed to produce white crystalline Sugar. This impressed us Indians . Hence we started calling sugar cheeni .

2nd Story

This story is more convincing in my opinion . According to this story a chinese man escped from China . He sought refugee in India . In India he managed to earn some money and set up a Sugar mill. This was allegedly India’s first Sugar mill . Since then we started calling suagr as cheeni or chini .

Both stories are equally convincing . Which one did you find convincing ?. Real poverty is the poverty of knowledge . Money is too mainstream .
